When our Chicago drivers hear they have a BMW recall, many get worried about just what that means. You don’t need to worry; you’ve come to the right place. The Perillo BMW service center is here to remedy any BMW recalls on your vehicle. Not all recalls are serious, but like your BMW warning lights, you should take all recalls seriously — after all, the automaker (or the NHTSA) says work needs to be done.

What is a Car Recall?

While some automakers will issue recalls for technology updates or other features, the majority of auto recalls drivers hear about are safety related. An auto recall occurs when the NHTSA or the auto manufacturer determines that a vehicle has a defect or does not comply with a federal safety standard.

When a recall happens, the automaker alerts owners to the problem and typically offers repairs free of charge.

What if I Don’t Receive a Recall Letter?

While automakers do their best to contact owners about recalls, they may not always have the right address on file. If you hear about a BMW recall — or a recall on any vehicle you own — and you want to check, go to the manufacturer’s website or visit the NHTSA website to enter your VIN and check for any recalls.

Do I Have to Pay for a Recall?

It is incredibly uncommon for a recall to require payment from the vehicle’s owner, though it is a good idea to bring your recall letter with you to the dealership just in case. If someone tells you that you would need to pay for a recall, it’s a good idea to ask to speak with the manager directly, as it could be a misunderstanding.
