Especially if you have a small or lightweight car, driving in strong wind can be scary. Here are some tips to keep from getting blown off the road.

When driving in strong winds, it’s important to be prepared for objects that blow into the street in front of you or objects on the side of the road that could blow into your path. Avoid driving under or near trees that look like a branch may be about to snap.

Driving slower is a good idea in any bad weather, and strong wind is no exception. Not only does slowing down reduce how much wind you’re producing, it gives you more time to slow down if the wind blows something in front of you or causes another vehicle to swerve.

Semi-trucks and other large truck drivers have the hardest time driving in strong wind, so give them plenty of room. They know how to handle it, but you never know what will happen, and the last thing you want is to be knocked into by a giant truck.

If you feel the wind pushing your car out of the lane, don’t panic. Just gently steer back into the right lane. Overcorrecting is never a good thing and could put you in a dangerous situation. As long as you practice smart defensive driving techniques, you’ll be good to go!
