Are All Electric Car Chargers the Same?

If you are considering an electric vehicle or you already own one and want to take home another to Chicago, you may be wondering about the different types of electric car chargers. Are all electric car chargers the same? Fortunately, electric car chargers are universal! All EVs require the same standard plug for Level 1 and Level 2 charging. The only exception to this is the Tesla Supercharger, which is exclusive to the brand.

Learn all about the different types of electric car chargers below to see what sets them apart.

What are the Different Types of Electric Car Chargers?

Park Ridge drivers will likely encounter these three options for EV charging: Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3. What sets them apart from one another is charging speed. Below, you will find an overview of the different types of electric car chargers, their charging speeds, and where you can find each option around Oak Park:

Level 1 Charging

Level 1 chargers have a charging speed of 3 to 5 miles per hour. A Level 1 charger uses a 120-volt household outlet, so all you need to do is plug the charging equipment into a standard wall outlet. Because this is the most time consuming method of charging, it is often reserved for plug-in hybrid vehicles because they are equipped with smaller batteries. If you are a driver that is constantly on the roads of Chicago, Level 1 charging is not recommended. If you primarily use your EV for quick local errands, Level 1 charging will likely be adequate.

Level 2 Charging

Level 2 charging can add anywhere from 12 to 80 miles to your EV per hour. If you travel longer distances on a regular basis, you will likely want to opt for this method of charging. You can have a Level 2 charging station installed at your home, and you may even find them around stores, workplaces, and plazas.

Level 3 Charging

Level 3 charging, which is the fastest method of the three, has a charging speed of 3 to 20 miles per minute. These charging stations utilize a direct current, while Level 1 and Level 2 chargers use an alternating current. A Level 3 charging station needs a much higher voltage, so it is not likely that this method will be used for home charging.
