How to Check Your Transmission Fluid

When you know how to check your transmission fluid and do so on a regular basis, you can prevent more extensive repairs before they are necessary. Transmission repairs can get quite costly, so simple tasks like checking your transmission fluid can be well worth your time. If you are not sure how to check your transmission fluid, the service experts at Perillo BMW would be glad to show you how. This task can be completed in just a few simple steps.

Our Guide to Checking Your Transmission Fluid

To successfully check your transmission fluid, all you have to do is follow the steps below:

  1. Turn the engine on for a few minutes before you check the level. The engine should be warm for accurate results. Make sure you put the vehicle in park before you open the hood.
  2. Locate the transmission fluid dipstick. If you own a front-wheel drive vehicle, you will most likely find the transmission fluid dipstick to the right of the oil dipstick. If you are not sure of its location, you can always take a look at your owner’s manual.
  3. Remove the dipstick and touch the fluid. Inspect its appearance to make sure that it is still nearly clear with a slight pink hue. If you notice that it is full of contaminants or it has a burning smell, it is time for it to be replaced.
  4. Use a rag to wipe off the dipstick. Then insert it back into the vehicle. Pull it out again and check the level. If the level falls below the “Full” marking, additional transmission fluid needs to be added.
  5. Use a funnel to properly fill the vehicle, taking care to avoid overfilling it.

If any issues occur while you are performing this task, do not hesitate to reach out to the experts at Perillo BMW.

Checking the Fluid in a Sealed Transmission

What if you look under the hood, but can’t find the transmission fluid dipstick? It is likely that your particular make and model has a sealed transmission. What is a sealed transmission? While it sounds like the transmission cannot be accessed, what this really means is that the transmission does not feature a dipstick. The transmission fluid level can still be checked, but it is best to leave this up to a professional at the Perillo BMW service center.

When to Check the Fluid in a Sealed Transmission

Sealed transmissions can help you save money in the long run because they help to decrease the amount of transmission fluid that is wasted over time. Even with this type of transmission, the fluid will still need to be replaced. If you notice any of these warning signs, a replacement may be necessary.

  • You can hear strange noises when the gears change.
  • The gears hesitate before changing.
  • During acceleration, there’s a noticeable delay when the gears shift.

How Often Do You Check Your Transmission Fluid?

It is a good idea to check all of the main fluids in your vehicle at least once a month. In addition to your transmission fluid, you should also check the power steering fluid and engine oil. Your owner’s manual may have different recommendations, so it is best to see what is suggested by the manufacturer.
