BMW iDrive Update Overview

Depending on the age and features of your BMW, you may need to perform a full or partial BMW iDrive update. Check out this BMW iDrive hack to determine what type of update you might need for your X7 or 5 Series:

  • If you have system-wide issues, the electronic control modules might need to be reset, which should be done by a BMW-certified technician like those at Perillo BMW. This is because BMW diagnostic computers are required to determine the root cause of the problem. A full update is only recommended when absolutely necessary.
  • A partial software update is more common and possible to perform at home. This might be simply updating features like Bluetooth®, multimedia systems, and mobile device compatibility. See below for further instructions on how to do a partial software update.

How to Perform a Partial Software Update

  1. Locate your vehicle’s VIN in order to see if there are available updates for your vehicle. It is usually printed into the driver’s side of the dashboard, best viewed when looking at the bottom of your windshield from outside the car.
  2. Enter the VIN here to find any updates.
  3. Download any available updates to a USB drive.
  4. Insert the USB drive into the BMW USB port to transfer the updates to your BMW.

Once the updates have been transferred, you will be able to take advantage of the most up-to-date software available for your vehicle.
