How to Reset Your Check Engine Light

What should you do if you’re driving along the road in Chicago somewhere and the check engine light comes on? Do you ignore it? Should you pull over right away and call roadside assistance? The truth is, there could be any number of reasons the check engine light is lit. That has led many drivers to try to reset it. Is that wise? Perillo BMW of Chicago wants to help you be safe and to keep your car running in top shape. So let’s talk about how to reset the check engine light, and whether you should.

First, Check Your Fuel Cap

It’s true. A check engine light can come on just because the fuel cap isn’t tight enough. This isn’t always the reason, but you can save yourself the trouble of trying to reset the check engine light if it does happen to be the issue.

Why You Should Not Reset the Check Engine Light

No one wants to be broken down along the road somewhere in Park Ridge. And while the problem causing the check engine light to come on could be insignificant, that often isn’t the case. There could be a serious problem causing the light to flash. To make sure, schedule an appointment with the service center at Perillo BMW of Chicago.

How to Reset the Check Engine Light, If You Must

If you’re still set on resetting the check engine light yourself, the process is very simple. Just follow these steps:

  1. Put on safety glasses and gloves, then turn off the ignition.
  2. Find the negative terminal on the battery. On most batteries, you will see a black cap and a negative (–) symbol. The positive terminal usually has a red cap and a positive (+) symbol.
  3. Use a wrench to loosen the nut on the negative terminal. Take the negative connector off of the battery. Set it to the side for 30 seconds to one minute.
  4. Reconnect the negative cable and use the wrench to tighten it again.
